WhirlyBall Chicago

WhirlyBall is  easily one of the greatest drinking sports inventions there is. For those of you who don’t know, it’s a mix between the following sports:

  • Basketball
  • Lacrosse
  • Bumper cars

Basically you get a little boozed up with your friends / coworkers, and hit the whirlyball court for a 5 on 5 bumper car battle. You have plastic lacrosse mitts and try to pass the ball around and score a goal on your opponents. The goal is a 1.5 or so foot hole in the middle of a basketball backboard.

Checking, ramming, and bumping of all sorts is allowed and strongly encouraged (especially as the booze starts flowing). Very fun place for company events and outings; i’d have to give the Chicago Lincoln Park location a 5 out of 5 on the drunken fun scale.. where else can you drunkenly operate heavy machinery safely and legally?

Kelvin Sampson resigns

Kelvin Sampson, heralded Indiana basketball coach, has resigned amidst a NCAA scandal on allegations he violated recruiting rules….AGAIN. Sampson was initially on probation from recruiting violations from his 2000-2004 seasons at Oklahoma. Sampson knowingly and admittedly made 500+ calls over the limit to recruits. Most recently, Sampson was brought up on charges that he made an extra 100 calls during his time at Indiana, and participated in 10 3-way calls with a recruit and his assistant coach.

Sampson agreed to resign and accepted a $750 ,000 buy out with a clause stating he can not sue Indiana University. He has accepted this stipulation, but nothing is inked yet. Sampson says he is ready to defend himself in front of the NCAA as soon as he can.

Honestly, I called this from the start. Sampson had obvious problems at Oklahoma, and Indiana’s athletic director was taking a gamble when hiring him. I think a few inept years under Mike Davis really drove a “we want it now” attitude into Indiana’s decision makers, directly causing them to make a bad one.

Right out of the gates, Sampson lures controversial recruit Eric Gordon away from Illinois, a team he already verbally committed to. Hey Kelvin: did you know that the big ten coaches have a gentleman’s agreement to not go after verballed recruits? I guess that’s why Bruce Webber is so mad?

Sampson has set Indiana basketball back further than anyone can imagine; well worse than another mediocre year with Mike Davis. Save a national championship; this season is a black mark on Indiana’s almost squeaky clean (see bob knight vs Indiana) resume.

Michigan State vs Indiana college basketball

Wow, Eric Gordon is a beast. Hats off to Indiana, that was a very impressive win. Not sure what exactly is wrong with my Spartans, but the truly better team won.

Let me just say that the three point shooting from Indiana was just brilliant. They mirrored Tennessee-esque play with the accuracy and # of attempts.

Dreams of a Big Ten championship have left my mind, and all I can hope for is that Tom Izzo gets our guys to play hard during the NCAA tournament… Oh, and that we don’t have to play North Carolina in the second round!

MSU Star Shines during SuperBowl

Yes folks, that’s right, the one and only Plaxico Burress is a Spartan. What better way to end the game by seeing Plaxico Burress catch the game winning touchdown to RUIN wolverine Tom Brady’s perfect season.

Sweet Sweet Justice :)

Terrelle Pryor - Go to OSU!

Hey Terrelle - Go to OSU! I know you want to be like Steve Slaton, and you’re probably thinking Rich Rodriguez is the best way of attaining that goal… but wouldn’t you want to play for a perennial national championship contender (granted they have lost two years in a row) than a team that lost to Appalachian State?

I know you knocked Michigan State off of your list.. that’s too bad; Izzo was recruiting you for basketball and you could have been on an up and coming football team but a very badass basketball team. At least with OSU over Michigan, you can be on a SOLID football team and a SOLID basketball team. Michigan lost to central michigan in basketball, and some other REALLY crappy teams too.

And before you say it… Grand Valley State, blah blah blah.. Yeah, guess who’s 17-0 right now? That same GVSU team that beat the spartans during an exhibition game. What’s Central Michigan’s record? Exactly.

When Michigan lost to Appy State, they said “So, they could probably beat most of the teams in the big ten”, well same excuse goes for GVSU. They are GOOD for a D2 program. Sound familiar?

Anyway Terrelle, go to OSU. Don’t let Michigan try and fool you; the girls there are ugly as sin, and the campus is a hole.

How in the world does that sound appealing? And if they were the leaders and the best, they wouldnt’ have lost to OSU 4 years in a row. MSU knows its place in the football food chain; we lost to Michigan 6 years in a row but we don’t call our selves the best team in the country.  Delusional!

Spartan Basketball - PHEW!

So I couldn’t post after Michigan State scored only 36 points (TOTAL) in their first road game against Iowa Saturday. I was too devastated.

I had to wait until we faced back to back big ten champs Ohio State last night… The outcome you ask? Well, the spartan dawgs got a big W last night, 66-60. I’d like to give Thad Matta and OSU some credit though; the buckeyes came back from a 21 point deficit and made a strong second half run.

I’ve realized that whenever Raymar Morgan gets in early foul trouble, our team is headed for the pits unless Drew Neitzel can man up and lead the team like he did the entire year last year. Problem is, he’s got what we call the Michigan State Senior Slump (Chris Hill, Mo Ager anyone?).

Here’s to hoping Indiana lays a big egg at Minnesota, Tubby Smith has those boys playing lights out!

Kentucky Basketball - What’s Wrong?

So I just saw the Louisville Cardinals vs Kentucky Wildcats game… Does Kentucky need an intervention?

What’s going on with one of the most storied programs in College Basketball history?! I was always a fan of Kentucky when Tubby Smith was there, but I think they lost a great coach when he left for the Minnesota Gophers.

Alex Legion was wowed by the cheers in Rupp Arena, and his mom prophesized her son coming home to detroit to play in the NCAAs… What happened there?

Is Billy G the man for the job? More comments as the season goes on.

Looking forward to ex-Kentucky coach Tubby Smith to come to the Breslin Center and take on my Michigan State Spartans tonight at 7PM Central!! GO STATE!
